Fishing Derby Rules and Requirements for Cub Scouts/Siblings

  • Youth must be accompanied by an adult and use the buddy system when moving about the area.
  • Fishing for the Derby begins at 10:00 am when the horn blows and ends at 12:00 pm horn blows.
  • ADULTS CANNOT REEL IN FISH. Adults may assist (help bait the hook, help cast the line, and take fish off the hook) and coach their youth.  The youth must reel in the fish. Your youth will be disqualified if, in the opinion of the judges, a parent does more than assist.  All catches MUST be youth caught, in spirit of the Cub Scout Fishing Derby.
  • Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen, bug spray, and water to stay hydrated.
  • LEAVE NO TRACE is in effect.  All debris, trash, bait, and tackle must be removed from the fishing site when you leave. A Scout leaves a place better than they found it!
  • You are welcome to bring your own food and beverages and they can be eaten anytime as long as all food items are at least 50 feet from the water's edge.  (Sodas and water are welcomed – NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES)

  • Youth must furnish their own fishing equipment to include fishing pole/rod and reel, hooks, fishing line, bobbers, bait, buckets  etc.
  • NO ARTIFICIAL LURES may be used. Youth must use natural bait such as live worms, crickets, grubs, dough balls, etc.
  • Only one fishing rod per youth and it must be tended.
  • NO STRINGERS PLEASE.  Bucket will be needed for your catch. Each scout must transport fish in a bucket to keep their catch in. Scouts can share buckets.
  • Place any fish in your bucket filled with lake water and bring to catch measure/weigh station immediately.
  • DO NOT SAVE YOUR CATCH. The Catch must immediately be taken to the measure/weigh station.  DECEASED FISH WILL NOT COUNT AS A QUALIFIED CATCH.
  • Please release catch immediately after measuring and weighing is completed. This is a catch and release event only.
